Grand Chessmaster In the making...
UPDATE:
We just got back from a visit to a friends house. He's 31 yr old Engineer. Mathias beat him pretty soundly. I hope it didn't hurt his feelings too bad. It cant be any fun getting beat in chess by a kid who doesn't even know how to read yet.
Mathias, who has only been playing chess for about four months is rapidly becoming the best chess player in house. He beat me the other day when I sat down to teach him a lesson because he had been telling everyone who would listen he had massacred me (I let him win the first game he ever played to get him interested). Well, this time I was gonna give him no breaks to bring him back to earth! Well I made a mistake (not on purpose) and I couldn't recover, he trounced me for real. He had already beaten my friend Fernando( whos 30 or so) the day before and Chris, a 16 year old who like chess, and poor Isaiah, whose become his daily victim. Sunday he played Zion (whose probably a little better than me) and had him whooped too but slipped and made a mistake as he was cornering him into checkmate. He had put him in check four or five times in a row, and was closing in with all his pieces. Zion took about twice as long as Mathias to make his moves and still should've lost. I'm sure within a few months he may just beat us all consistently. Now if i can only get him to help me with my Algebra...

Wow! As I recall Noah was also a chess prodigy...
They have books and chess teachers and you might wanna check out chess clubs. did he learn on the computer?
He has Chessmaster 9000 on the computer. I been trying to get ahold of an friend whose a really good player to give him chess lessons. He gives lessons at a private school, he told me one time he had a 12 year old he was teaching who could beat me. I paid him a few times to teach me some tips. As for books, he really cant read well enough yet. His schol has a chess club, but for third graders and up. his going into first grade soon. Maybe they'll make an exception.
hes only been on the computer a few times. I've taught him a few things but not a whole lot. He does well when he plays consistently, but I havent played him but 4 or 5 times. i told isaiah they had to play chess before they could play XBOX so he's been playing like 4-5 games a week. not alot.
personally I think Danny is turning Mathias into his little trick pony he likes to show off. . . a hustler . . . "here, why don't you play my 6 yr old son?" . . . fortunately Mathias enjoys playing.
I would like to add that yes, he almost beat me. Danny claims he didn't coach him, but everytime mathias would pick up a piece to make a move that danny didn't like, danny would say "REMEMBER WHAT I SAID!" and "I DON'T KNOW IF I WOULD DO THAT". By the end of the match Mathias would just start to move a piece and stare at his dad to see if he approved.
Actually Mathias would have probably beat me if it hadn't been for dannys "tips". It was Danny who told his kid to make an exchange that ended Mathias' chances.
Danny, if the kid beats you by himself, don't try to help him. You should ask HIM for advice.
Zion keeps telling it that way but I said very little until Zion had the match won and was finishing Mathias off. The entire time that Mathias had him cornered it was his own doing. He knows that but continues to make excuses. I told him "Remember what I taught you" once and Zion had a fit cuz he was sweating hard. Even MAthias told him in the middle of the match "Man, Zion, you take forever!" Zion was sweating bullets and he knows it. I didnt say much until I gave him some tips when he had made the end move mistake and the game was essentally over anyway.
Have you ever played scrabble with Zion??
Don't.
It takes FOREVER!!!!
oh please..he's just learning. He was beating Elijah on his own when Elijah offered him a draw because he was getting killed. i wasnt in the room
Hey who cares if Danny helps him a little. He's only six. But he also needs to learn to lose too, so don't help him too much.
Just as long as he doesn't think it's the end of the world and he's letting his dad down if he happens to lose. Maybe you could watch that movie "Searching for Bobby Fisher" with Mathias and discuss the issues it presents.
By the way Bobby Fisher turned out to be some crazy whacked out anti-Semite hermit, even though he was one of the greatest chess players ever.
Tio Efrain used to take Hurold out and run him in races against adults and bet and win money on Hurold when he was just a little kid. Hurold had a lot of pressure on him to win. He did win the gold medal in the Junior Olympics, but then like Forrest Gump, he just quit running.
You might wanna ask Hurold if he thinks that showing the kid off is good or bad, or how to encourage his talent without causing psychological damage. As long as he's enjoying it it seems like a great hobby.
Ugh. you think Elijah would have offered a draw if he wasnt getting beat?. I would have never let him take it if I was watching the game. I saw the chess board afterwards and he was getting spanked.
Hey a draw is pretty impressive to me especially against Elijah. You can get lucky and beat someone, but getting them to offer a draw means you have inspired fear and a healthy respect.
